Change Your Thinking
Your thoughts and your actions are the reasons why you are overweight or out-of-shape.
Every other “weight loss” program on the market tells you how you should change your actions if you want to "lose" weight. They tell you that you should eat this, that you should not eat that, that you should do this exercise, and that you should do it this often.
They then leave it up to you to do these things as if you are some sort of robot who can or will just follow this magical script to weight loss. And when you aren't able to do them what happens? You are lead to believe that you are problem, that you don't have the willpower or self-control to lose weight, when nothing can further from the truth!
First, let's be clear, you are not a robot! If weight loss was as easy as simply knowing what you should be doing and then doing it, you would have already lost the weight.
Chances are you already know what you should be doing, you know what foods you should and should not be eating, and you know you should be exercising more. You don’t suffer from a lack of information, you suffer from a lack of follow through.
If you think you lack the willpower or self-control to lose weight, you're dead wrong. You've been drinking the kool aid that the weight loss industry has been serving to you. They want you believe that you lack the willpower and self-control to lose weight, because the longer you stay overweight, the more money they make. If you are not to blame for you inability to lose weight, they are.
The truth however is that there is blame on both sides:
First, their programs are lacking because they don't ever teach you how to change your thinking. These supposed weight loss program simply give you a list of new actions you should be doing.
Second, you are also to blame. If you are ever going to make a change in your life, you have to first be willing to accept responsibility for your results. If your results are lacking in any area of life, it is not because you are incapable of doing what is necessary to achieve what you want, it is more than likely because your thinking is off. You need to change your mindset AND your actions. Anytime you focus on only half the formula, you will never achieve the results you desire.
Yes, you will need to how you eat and exercise if you want to lose weight, but more importantly and simultaneously, you will also need change how you think and feel about food and exercise if you want to lose weight.
There are two ways you can change your actions when it comes to losing weight:
- You can start some fad diet or exercise program and intellectually learn more about what you should and should not do each day. Then, each day, you can try and use your willpower and self-control to forcibly make drastic change your actions. But as you have undoubtedly already learned, this way does NOT work, and yet it is the ONLY method provided by other weight loss program on the market today. (If you want to read more about why using your willpower and self-control does not create long term change, read this article on Why New Years Resolutions Fail and How to Make them Succeed)
- You can change your thinking. You can use your willpower to consciously change how you think and feel about food and exercise, and you can combine that with making small, incremental changes to what foods you eat and how much you exercise. This combination of changing your thinking and changing your actions is what you can use to produce your own Weight Loss Mindset.
You need to change how you think and feel about food, if you want to eat differently without relying on your self-control to fight your cravings.
You need to change how you think and feel about exercise, if you want to exercise more often or more intensely without relying on your willpower to force yourself into the gym.
You need to change yourself from the inside out. In other words you need to develop a weight loss mindset (and take the actions that back it up) if you truly want to drop weight and keep it off.
